The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum in Annapolis, Maryland, is set to unveil Sacred Spaces. Sacred Spaces is a powerful new exhibition by renowned artist Jabari Jefferson, on February 8, 2025. This immersive showcase celebrates African American heritage while championing sustainability in art. We’re truly excited about such a unique and thought-provoking experience for Baltimore and the broader DMV community.
Art That Speaks to the Soul
Sacred Spaces is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the African American experience. Jefferson’s innovative use of oil paint, mixed media, and augmented reality transforms discarded materials—textiles, books, soil, and clothing—into stunning works of art. These pieces challenge societal norms, drawing parallels between the devaluation of Black scholarship and the disposability of modern consumer culture.
The exhibition features never-before-seen works on canvas and striking sculptures. Also featuring a large-scale community installation created in collaboration with local Annapolis students and residents. Through his art, Jefferson breathes new life into forgotten objects, affirming the enduring significance of Black intellectual and spiritual traditions.
Honoring Maryland’s Legacy
Sacred Spaces pays homage to iconic Marylanders such as Harriet Tubman and Benjamin Banneker. Their contributions to history and culture continue to inspire. The exhibition also explores themes of identity, migration, and the deep connection between Black people and the land. Ultimately it offers a rich, educational experience for visitors.
